Carrick-on-Suir Rugby Football Club


When was the Club founded?


There was a Club in existence in the second half of the 19th century, but records go back officially to 1923. The Club was founded when the Cricket Club in Carrick-beg dissolved and the Rugby Club was founded. Among the founder members were:


William (Bud) Galvin, Jack Walsh, Martin Walsh all of New Street and Tommy Lynch amongst others.


They played matches all over Munster and South Leinster, but ceased to function in 1941/42 owing to the War and shortage of petrol. Amongst those who played in this period were:


William (Bud) Galvin, Jack Walsh, Martin Walsh all of New Street and Tommy Lynch, Eddie Cheasty, Paddy Feehan, Tucker and Jimmy Parle, Joe Connolly, John O’Donnell, Jackie O’Driscoll, Danny Kirwan of Kilmacthomas, Eddie Hearn now residing in Ballyneale, R. O’Neill of Portlaw, Mick Lynch, John Hearn, Kevin Nugent, Frank Nugent, Bill Kiely, Alphy Hearn, Tommy Kiely, John Shee, Paddy Dalton of Bridge Street, Paddy Heffernan, Eddie McGrath, John Connolly.


The Club was re-formed in 1957 as a result of a meeting amongst those there were:


Dr Paul O’Brien, Bud Galvin, Michael Cleary, Tom Cleary, Ray Burke and Dick Cleary.


During these years the Club played at many venues and amongst those were:


The Castle Field, Off Coolnamuck Road, Pill Road (opposite Tinvane), Cregg Road, Mountrichard, Deerpark and Tybroughney.


The Club purchased 17 acres in Tybroughney in 1977. The Club now has 3 pitches, a clubhouse and many facilities such as floodlighting, etc.

Carrick on Suir RFC fielded their first ever Girls Rugby Team at a friendly match kindly hosted by Clonmel Rugby Club, on Saturday 20th of November 2010.
