The Under 17s went on a hugely successful tour to Edinburgh, Scotland over the Easter long weekend 2010. They

stayed at the University of Edinburgh and played two matches, first against Berwick Upon Tweed (an English Side) on

Good Friday which they won 28-19, and then Dalkeith (just South of Edinburgh) on Saturday also winning 38-12. They

played some fantastic rugby and each was a credit to their club and country.

Carrick Under 10s bring home silverware from Clonmel!

Under brilliant April sunshine, Carrick-on-Suir U10s (pictured) recently competed in the
annual East Munster Rugby Blitz at Clonmel RFC.
The pool stage of the tournament started very well for Carrick with a 5-0 win against the
Clonmel Tigers (scorers: Richie Norris [two], Dean Walsh, Aaron Gallagher and Michael Dineen.
In their second match Carrick faced a sterner test against Clanwilliam who were coming from
a 2-0 loss to a very impressive Nenagh side. Clan started the stronger and scored an early try, but Carrick composed themselves and had levelled the score by the end of the first half through Michael Dineen. The match ended a try apiece.
This meant that to be sure of qualifying Carrick needed to take at least a point from their
final pool match against Nenagh who had not conceded a try in their first two pool matches. The game began at a fast pace and Nenagh showed their class to take an early lead and despite some impressive defensive work by Carrick, Nenagh extended their lead to 3-0. However, Carrick dug deep and scored just before half time to make it 3-1. Early in the second half Nenagh attempted to close the game out, but Carrick’s defence held-out and through a combination of impressive defensive work and ball-handling skills, Carrick scored an excellent counter-attack try to make it 3-2. This second try gave Carrick new confidence and through a period of concerted pressure scored a well-deserved third try to tie the game. The last few minutes of the game were played at a fast pace with a high degree of skill displayed on both sides, but the scores remained level at 3-3, the tries scored by Richie Norris(two) and Michael Dineen.
Carrick qualified for the plate competition and did not get to play their semi-final game
against Dungarvan who withdrew, but there was high drama to follow in the final where they faced a powerful Cashel side.
Once again Carrick started slowly and Cashel’s huge forwards wreaked havoc on the Carrick
defence, but several minutes into the first half it was discovered that Cashel were accidentally fielding nine players in this eight-a-side contest. Impassioned pleas were made by the Cashel coaching staff, but the referee and stewards’ ruling was that in the interest of fairness the game would have to be re-started. From the whistle Cashel went straight back on the attack, but Carrick showed true character and defended heroically against the much bigger Cashel forwards and once again their confidence grew as the Cashel attacks became less potent and Carrick won more and more possession. The game remained scoreless until late in the first half when and well-worked turnover and some fast handling gave Carrick an overlap which they exploited to score in the corner.
In the second half Carrick continued to defend well and started to penetrate on their own
attacks and a late breakaway could very easily have led to a second for Carrick, but the final score remained 1-0 and Carrick victorious, Michael Dineen scoring the crucial try!
The exuberant players showed their appreciation of the win with a victory lap around the
Clonmel first team’s pitch in what was a well-deserved end to Carrick-on-Suir U10’s 2008-9 season.
The squad, coached by Tim Dineen and Donal Moriarty, was composed of: Thomas Murray, Shane

Walsh, Shane Torpey, Shane Grehan, Sam Grace, Ronan Ryan, Robert Scahill, Richie Norris,

Oisin Brophy, Michael Dineen, Dylan Walsh, Dylan Oakey, Dean Walsh, David Needham, Conor

Murphy, Andrew Secrett, Alex Olsen and Aaron Gallagher.

Report 9 March 2009

Carrick hosted an under 13 blitz on Sunday last; there were visiting teams from Clonmel and Waterpark. Carrick’s first match, which was their first ever full pitch outing, was a one sided affair against a bigger and stronger Waterpark team who won by four tries to nil. Carrick’s second match was against Clonmel, a team who gave an impressive performance against Waterpark just before hand. After a shaky start and two early tries by Clonmel, the Carrick lads began to put some moves together. There were tries for Carrick by Aaron Moroney, Callum McElligott and David Kinsella, eventually loosing five tries to three.

There is training for all under 8s to under 12s this Sunday at 10.30am in Tybroughney, with
a blitz in Clonmel the following week for the under 10s and 12s. This Sunday the under 14s play Galbally away in the East Munster Cup and the under 16s travel to play Thurlas in the East Munster Plate. Also this Sunday Carrick 1st XV travel to Kilrush for the quarter final of the O’Sullivan Cup, a match which was rescheduled from last Sunday.

Report 11th January 2009

** On Sunday next, Carrick-on-Suir’s Under 14s host Fethard at Tybroughney while the Under 16s welcome Waterpark to their neck of the rugby-playing woods.

Report 4th January 2009

Carrick under 13s played well but were no match for Cashel in the semi

final of the under 13 cup away in Cashel. Carrick scored two tries and a

conversion in what was otherwise a convincing win for Cashel. Scott

Bennett and Wayne McGrath both gave man of the match performances.

Training will continue on Wednesday night ahead of league matches for

both the under 14s and 16s teams over the coming weeks. The under 16s are

in action this weekend while the under 14s play Clanwilliam at home on

January 18th. The under 8s to under 12s will resume training this Sunday

in Tybroughney at 10.30am.

Report 2nd November 2008

Carrick welcomed Kilfeacle to Tybroughney for a selection of matches from the under 6s to the under 12s. To begin with the Carrick under 12s had a deserving win 9 tries to 6 with particularly good tries coming from Niall Blanchfield, Liam Fortune, Josh Quinn to name just a few, Aidan Nugent, Alan Dowley and Jack Murphy had good games while Karen Ryan did particularly well with great forward play. There were two under 10s teams fielded, the first drew three tries all. Ian Long, Ronan Ryan, Oisin Brophy, Sam Driver, Richie Norris and Michael Dineen all played well while Jack Murphy had a powerhouse of a game. The other under 10 team were beaten by a better Kilfeacle team but they all put in a great effort, improved rucking and tackling will make a huge difference. The under 8s lost 8 tries to 4 but were better than the scoreline suggests, Katherine Dineen and Aaron Kinsella had good games. Coach Thierry Blacque is working hard to bring this age group to the next level. The new group of under 6s were the stars of the show drawing with their Kilfeacle counterparts 9 tries all. James Bourke, Conor Hogan, Neil Moriarty, Ian Balding, Ben Grace and all the others had a marvellous morning in the sun last Sunday and good luck to them next week.
